Longtime friend Gayle King says Oprah 'intrigued' about possible presidential bid
Entertainment mogul Oprah Winfrey is “intrigued” by the idea of running for president, Winfrey’s longtime friend and “CBS This Morning” anchor Gayle King said Tuesday morning.
King was clear in an exchange with her CBS co-anchors that she spoke with Winfrey on Monday night but was expressing a hunch, not relaying anything Winfrey had told her. Still, King said she sees a possibility that Winfrey might go back on her long-held position that she will not run for office.
“I do think she's intrigued by the idea. I do think that. I also know that, after years of watching the Oprah show, you always have the right to change your mind,” King said. “I don't think at this point she’s actually considering it, but listen, there are people who have said they want to be her campaign manager, who want to quit their jobs and campaign for her.”
Winfrey was honored at Sunday night’s Golden Globes award show with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Cecil B. DeMille award for her lifetime contributions to the entertainment industry. Her acceptance speech, which touched on notes of national unity and combating sexual harassment and assault, earned her rave reviews and sparked talk that she might mount a presidential campaign to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020.
