Bethesda, Maryland -( Little Ethiopia ) -Haile Selassie I University 2nd President Launches A Book That Highlights Its History and the Establishment/Expansion of Higher Education in Ethiopia. The veteran educator, Dr. Aklilu Habte completed his undergraduate from the University College of Addis Ababa (later Haile Selassie I University) and University of Manitoba in the 1950s was sent to the United States by UCAA to complete his Masters of Education and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University. Dr. Aklilu served as Head of the Education Department, Dean of the Faculties of Arts and Education, and Associate Academic Vice President of Haile Selassie I University, and he was the University’s 2nd President from 1969 to 1974. 

Dr. Habte has served as Special Advisor to the Executive Director of UNICEF, Director of the Education and Training Department at the World Bank and Chief of the Education Division.

There will be a panel discussion at the book launching event at the Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington D.C.The speakers included

  • Kesis Zelalem , from Kidist Mariam Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church
  • Ato Tekalign Gedamua, a former minister  of Haile Selassie I government and vice president African Bank 
  • Dr. Mulugeta Wedajo, former acadamic vice president of Haile Selassie I university
  • Dr. Almaz Zewde, professor at Howard University
  • Mr. Tewodros Abebe,  Assistant Archivist Howard University Moorland-Spingarn Research Center
