Lij  Amde Araya ( Jan. 11,1949-July 25, 2017 )

Annandale, Va. ( Little Ethiopia )-It was a sad day to learn the death of Lij Amde Araya who fought the brutal military communist government of Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam in the 1980's through protest and lobbying. He died on July 25, 2017 at 68. He has two children, a son Paulos Amde and a daughter Hanna Amde from his wife Woizero ( Mrs. ) Tekabetch Teshome.

His late father Lij Araya Abebe joined Dr. Melaku Bayen in Washington D.C. in 1936 after Emperor Haile Serlassie I was forced to exile in England after returning from the Battle of Maichew. The Ethiopian military was overwhelmed by Italy's usage of chemical war against the Ethiopian army in their 2nd attempt to colonize Ethiopia from 1935-41 ( the Italo-Abyssinian War ). Abyssinia is the ancient name of Ethiopia. Amde's elder brothers Mesfin and Merid Biru were killed in a shoot out with the brutal military government in 1970's. His late mother, Woizero Mulumebet Abebe, was the sister of Crown Princess Medferiashwork Abebe. We will publish a full obituary next week.
