2018 Grammy predictions: Will The Weeknd earn 3rd Album of the Year nomination for ‘Starboy’?

Daniel Montgomery,

The Weeknd made his debut with the 2013 album “Kiss Land,” but it wasn’t until his sophomore effort, “Beauty Behind the Madness” (2015), that he really broke into the public consciousness and onto the awards scene. He earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, one of seven bids he picked up in 2016, and now he’s hoping for a repeat of that success with his third album, “Starboy.”

“Starboy” was released in November 2016, early in the eligibility period. That could put it at risk of being forgotten, but it was a hit — double-platinum as of this writing — and it has spawned three top-10 singles: the title track, which reached number-one on the Billboard Hot 100, “I Feel it Coming” (peaked at number-10), and “Party Monster” (peaked at number-eight). The Weeknd later got another boost when he video for “Reminder” was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year and Best Direction.

The Weeknd won two of his Grammy nominations in 2016: Best R&B Performance for “Earned It” and Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Beauty Behind the Madness.” So he’s likely a strong contender again in genre categories, but he’s also been popular elsewhere in the general field. In 2016 he was also up for Record of the Year for “Can’t Feel My Face,” and then in 2017 he contended for Album of the Year for a second time, but this time as a featured artist on Beyonce‘s “Lemonade.”

As of this writing The Weeknd is on the bubble for a nomination, holding on to fifth place with odds of 6/1. Currently three out of five Gold Derby Editors believe he’ll earn a nom: Chris BeachumMarcus James Dixon, and Paul Sheehan. He’s also backed by seven of our Top 24 Users, who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Grammy nominations, and six of our All-Star Top 24, who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years’ Grammy predictions.
